xerofire® Clear Fire Retardant System
xerofire® Fire Retardant wood finishing systems from Morrells are class-leading systems, providing a high quality, exceptionally clear, furniture-grade finish with National Fire Class 0 accreditation as well as EN Euro Reaction to Fire Class B-s1,d0, the best possible Euro reaction to fire performance rating for a system of this type. Professional, fire retardant wood finishing system formulated to upgrade (or maintain) the fire-rating of a wide variety of wood-based substrates, including veneered panels, solid hard- and softwoods, plywood, MDF and wood-composite boards. The xerofire® Clear Fire Retardant Coatings system comprises of a 2K waterborne basecoat in combination with a 2K acid-catalyst clear topcoat providing a high quality, furniture-grade Fire Class 0 and Euro Fire Class B finish.
Scope for Use
xerofire®HP Fire-Retardant Clear System provides exceptional clarity and is suitable for use with most solid timbers, veneers, MDF and composite boards, giving the architect, specifier and designer a wide range of substrate options.
xerofire® is suitable for use with substrates that meet the following parameters:
- Thickness of at least 12mm
- Density of at least 510kg/m3
- Rating of at least D-s2,d0
xerofire® Clear Intumescent System
- xerofire® Isolator - a clear barrier-coat to prevent potential discolouration by acid-sensitive timbers
- xerofire® Basecoat - a clear waterborne fire retardant basecoat for use under xerofire® Clear topcoat
- xerofire® Clear Topcoat - a clear acid-catalysed lacquer topcoat for use over xerofire® Basecoat
xerofire® Isolator
A one-pack clear barrier-coat designed to isolate timber extractives. This is recommended to avoid potential discolouration, particularly with acid-sensitive timbers and fruitwoods such as maple, cherry and ash.
xerofire® Clear Fire Retardant Basecoat
A two-pack waterborne basecoat offering exceptional clarity and designed to retard the propagation and spread of fire to B-s1,d0 and National Fire Class 0.
During a fire, the basecoat swells to form an insulating charcoal layer. This layer prevents oxygen and heat from reaching the substrate, preventing ignition:
- Heat initiates degradation of the coating at around 250°C
- The basecoat reacts to form char
- The char expands
- Expansion prevents heat from reaching substrate
- Char eventually solidifies
xerofire®HP Clear Topcoat
A two-pack acid-catalyst furniture grade clear topcoat rated to FIRA 6250 Severe Use.

Usage
- Apply 1 coat of xerofire® Isolator
- Denib with 320g
- Apply frist coat of freshly mixed/reacted xerofire® Clear Basecoat. No denibbing required unless there is 4 hours or longer between recoating. If required lightly denib with 320/400 grit paper.
- Apply second coat of freshly mixed/reacted xerofire® Clear Basecoat
- Lightly denib with 320/400g sandpaper
- Apply 1 coat of xerofire® Clear Topcoat (no more than 1 coat is required)
